Doctor Who :: Series 6

Doctor Who Series 6 Review | Ribbons Down My Back

My siblings and I just finished series 6 of Doctor Who and are eagerly waiting for series 7 to come in at the library. Just one more season + Day of the Doctor and The Time of the Doctor before we're all caught up.

Eventually I'd like to do a review for every series, but since series six is fresh in my mind, I thought starting in the middle is better than not starting at all. So prepare yourself for Doctor Who awesome-ness!

Just a precaution: there will be plenty of spoilers ahead!

Series 6 is by far the most complected series so far. Lots of tie ins and we finally get all the details about River Song's past. I've been waiting for that since Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead!

The main alien/bad guys were the Silence. They remind me of the classic 1960's styled aliens, even more so since they wear suits. Surprisingly there weren't many of the typical DW aliens this season. There were some Cybermen in an episode, but the weren't nearly as threatening as in the past. We saw an Ood in one episode and a Dalek for a brief moment in another, but that was about it.

Closing Time was probably my favorite. I love ho the Doctor speaks baby and was talking with Alfie. Or Stormegeddon as he likes to be called. It was just a really fun episode with so many memorable parts.

Amy Pond, the girl who waited. I really wasn't a fan of her in series 5, I felt like she pushed the Doctor around a bit. But after she and Rory got married I began to like her a lot more. It's hard not to feel sad for her considering how long she waited for the Doctor the first time and how many times afterwards that he say's he'll visit soon and it's years later. In series 5 I didn't seem like Amy really appreciated Rory, but I feel like she does a lot more this season.

The Last Centurion, a.k.a. Rory Williams. He's awesome. He's always loved Amy and would do anything for her. After all, he waited over 2,000 years for her. Rory just goes with the flow no matter what is happening. I love how he always asks the logical/practical questions.

River Song, she's a favorite. Some people don't like her and the fact that's she's the Doctor's wife, but I don't mind. It always makes me happy when I watch an episode and discover she's in it.

I'll admit, after watching The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon I had to look up who the young girl who regenerated was. I nearly screeched with excitement (I refrained since it was late at night) and was practically jumping up and down when I found out she was River, who is the Pond's daughter.

It's weird when you think about it. Amy and Rory named their daughter Melody, after their friend Mels. But Mel was their daughter, so not only did they grow up with her as their friend, but the named their child after their child. Time travel is complected stuff, folks.

And of course, it wouldn't be Doctor Who without the Doctor. Matt Smith is such a wonderful and adorable doctor. In fact, that's probably the best word to describe Eleven: adorable.

He's really grown on me this season and I'm really going to miss him once he regenerates. *sniff* Even though he isn't as deep as past Doctor's, that's fine with me. I love them all, but all that deep sad stuff really gets to me. I think that's why I like Eleven best (or at least for now. That may change once I re-watch all the episodes). He's so happy and adorable.

What was your favorite part(s) about Series 6?

11 comments:

  1. I'm watching through DW for the second time, and I'm about halfway through series 5. Ten will always be my favorite, but I'm glad to be back in these episodes with Eleven. It seems like the storylines with Eleven are more complicated, and watching them a second time will help me connect everything again! :) I do love Amy and Rory (Rory more so than Amy, I think). And River Song, too, though I'm still not quite sure I understand her timeline...

Ha, I love Closing Time, too. That episode stands out as a really memorable, hilarious one for me. And the Silence are so creepy! I'm looking forward to seeing them again when I get to series 6.

    1. Yeah, Eleven's story lines are definitely much more complicated. I still feel like I'm missing a few pieces here and there, so I'm looking forward to re-watching them all again. I like Rory better as well and I'm I understand River better now that I had my sisters explain some of the details to me (somehow they're able to remember pretty much every single detail).

The Silence sure are creepy! Closing Time has to be the most humorous episode yet. I think it's one I'll be re-watcing a lot in the future. :)

  2. I just started this one (after starting with S5 - haven't seen any other series) and am so very fond of Matt Smith as the Doctor. He's fun, has a great chemistry with the cast and as you say, is adorable. I don't always "get" all of the time travel business and how everything connects but nonetheless, it's a blast - and a series I won't give up until I finish with Eleven. :)

Always loved Amy. She's smart and sassy - glad you're liking her better.

    1. Eleven is so adorable and is like a child when he gets excited. And Matt Smith is great. That's probably why I like him so much. Since you like the Matt Smith years so much you should consider giving the previous series' a try!

I'm glad I like her now to, as it's not nearly as fun watching when you can't stand the companion. *cough cough* Donna Noble *cough cough*

    2. He IS adorable. I just love him. So much. His enthusiasm and eagerness during his time travel adventures is contagious and of course, I adore his relationship with Amy and Rory. You know I've had other people recommend the previous years too. I'm skeptical but I may give it a show. Have to watch the rest of six yet. And seven. :)

Yes, disliking a sidekick character is rough. Especially when we, as viewers want to like all of the good guys! :)

  3. Right on, Sereina! I totally agree with you about Amy and Rory. I didn't much like how she treated Rory or the Doctor in season 5 either, but she did get better in season 6. And yeah, Rory is just awesome! Season 6 is when I really warmed up to Eleven too. I guess it took me a season to get over Ten's heartbreaking departure. I still think Ten is slightly more my favorite, since I do tend to like deep and sad, but Eleven is definitely adorable and hilarious and very fun to watch.

    1. Hooray for another Rory fan! :D I really liked Eleven from the beginning, but he's grown on me so much with each episode. Ten was wonderful, but since I didn't like Donna in series 4 so I was just ready for it to be over and didn't have any trouble getting over Ten. I know many of my fellow Whovians will be disappointed in me admitting that, given how much everyone loves Ten. ;)

    2. I'll forgive you. ;-) Not liking Donna would certainly take away from the enjoyment of Ten's era. For me, series 4 is my favorite season in the whole show. I didn't find any of the episodes to be "meh" like I did with a few from the other seasons. Plus, I'm just a huge David Tennant fan, so that probably contributes to my preference for Ten. :-) I love all the Doctors though. I've started watching some of the classic series and am really enjoying the old Doctors as well.

    3. Phew! Thank goodness. ;) Pretty much every series had a few "meh" episodes for me. Series 3 and 6 would probably be my favorites so far, though. I can totally see why everyone loves David Tennant, though. I've always liked the more goofy, fun-loving type, so it makes sense that I prefer Matt Smith. His style of goofy-ness is just perfect!

Good to know you're liking the original DW. I'm hoping to get to those sometime, just need to finish catching up with the new series first. :)

  4. Yay! Another Whovian! I also enjoyed the "Closing Time" episode because I love the 'bromance' going on between The Doctor and Craig. Lol!

FYI: I strongly urge you to search YouTube for a video that Matt Smith and James Corden did during a filming break in the middle of the night. It's really funny. Just search for "Doctor Who Confidential - Matt Smith and James Corden Home Video." They did a couple of fun home videos actually.

I think my favorite episode in Season 6 was "Let's Kill Hitler." But honestly... I love pretty much any episode with River Song. I know not everybody likes her, but I think she's one of the best characters on the show.

Rory is my favorite though. How can anyone not love a man that waited and protected his lady love for 2,0000 years?!

    1. Totally going to check out that video on YouTube! I'm planning on watching all the behind the scenes ones that I can once I'm all caught up.

Yeah, River Song is quite fantastic. It's sad that there are so many people that don't care for her, especially since the episodes she's in are so interesting!

I completely agree. Rory is the best.
